The big news this week is that Microsoft has revealed its metaverse plan by starting the process of acquiring games company Activision Blizzard. The all-cash deal, at $70bn, will take some time to close, but this aquisition clearly squares Microsoft up against Meta. It will be interesting to see what Apple and Amazon do to react to this move.
At Rerun, we are always keeping our eyes open for what we think could be transformative technologies of the future. As well as the metaverse, there's a lot swirling around about web3 right now, including a lot of snake-oil and head-scratching. However the technology holds some very interesting use cases for the creator economy, and rights management, so expect to hear a LOT about that this year.
