Portal launches ad-free video service with donations and micro-transactions
Portal's new video service launched on Tuesday. Portal will allow creators to charge anywhere from free to $100 per video or they can solicit fan donations.
Relying on donations has become a more viable option to creators. The success of creators using platforms like Patreon have lead to some earning tens of thousand a month. Fan funding has so much more appeal than just paying the bills, many creators are happy to leave the worries of YouTube's demonetization fears behind.
Portal co-founder and CEO Jonathan Swerdlin isn't a fan of the current model,
“Advertising is the biggest scam on the Internet, Platforms make billions. Creators earn rubbish".
Swerdlin has attracted some well-known creators to the platform and funding from Mark Cuban.
