Scare yourself inside a surreal 360-degree version of 'The Shining'

There are a lot of fictional worlds I would love to visit. Star Trek? Yes! Sunnydale? I'll bring Mr. Pointy! "Labryinth?" I've got a good sense of direction. "The Shining?" No way.

The classic Stanley Kubrick horror flick full of ghosts and madness is not my idea of a good vacation spot, but that hasn't stopped me from stepping inside its world through an immersive video. YouTube user Claire Sophie brings us a bizarre 360-degree look at "The Shining" that pans through a distorted vision of the Overlook hotel and its grounds, including the famous maze.

Here's the method for making this unusual visual experiment: "Using photogrammetry, 3D elements are extracted and extruded from the original film stills, and the subsequent fragments are stitched together and viewed along the original camera path." The video, which posted Tuesday, jumps straight into surreal territory with the opening credits blending into the landscape, characters appearing like ghosts and jagged black edges making it seem like the end of the world outside of the sets.

Claire Sophie's YouTube channel is filled with fascinating immersive explorations, including a dive into Dali's "Persistence of Memory" and a strange animated version of Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus" where you stand in Venus's spot above the shell.
