Entertainment company Modern Times Group (MTG) and European satellite and IPTV operator M7 group have reached an agreement to broadcast ESL’s esportsTV channel in HD on M7’s satellite TV platforms.
Countries that will receive the channel include Belgium, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and the Netherlands. More platforms will follow. EsportsTV launched in May 2016 as the first 24/7 esports channel; it’s already available on MTG’s Nordic and Baltic Viasat satellite platforms and through other third-party distributors.
“Esports is the world’s fastest growing professional sport and is expected to engage more than 250 million people already this year,” MTG CEO and President Jørgen Madsen Lindemann said in a press release. “It is also a hugely popular entertainment format that is pulling in massive online viewing and attracting big stadium audiences around the world, and esportsTV will raise awareness levels even further.”
Coverage will include the ESL One New York Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament which is set for October 1 – 2 in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
Public awareness of esports continues to rise across the globe. While North American esports fans don’t get 24/7 access to esports content on broadcast television, they do get bits and pieces here and there on television. Mostly notably, the upcoming Overwatch Open grand finals are set to be broadcast on TBS.
