Apple is turning Carpool Karaoke into an Apple Music series

Apple is turning Carpool Karaoke, the Late Late Show with James Corden segment that regularly goes viral, into its own TV show, which will air on Apple Music. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Apple has ordered 16 episodes, which will be released weekly once the series is ready. It's not known who will host the new show, though the Reporter says it's unlikely to be Corden.

Can Apple recreate the success of 'Lip Sync Battle'?

While this can all sound a bit ridiculous, this is, at a minimum, a solid idea for a TV series. Celebrity karaoke is a winning formula, as we've seen with Jimmy Fallon's lip sync battle segment, which has since been turned into a series on Spike where it set viewership records. Apple is certainly hoping to repeat that formula here. Given that Carpool Karaoke seems to go viral almost every time it airs, it seems like there's a real chance.

The Carpool Karaoke series is easily Apple's most notable step into video content yet. It's been funding music videos here and there, ordered an app reality show, and has some short form videos in the works, but this show seems like something that Apple wants to become a legitimate hit. It may be harder for the series to go viral if it's behind Apple Music's $10 per month subscription paywall, but it's easy to understand how Apple thinks a series about singing is a natural fit for a music service.
